Aim
To develop an understanding of the issues relating to loss and grief and enhance communication skills, particularly in relation to practical matters and difficult issues that families have to consider around the time of death as highlighted in 'When a Patient Dies: Advice on Developing Bereavement Services in the NHS' (DH Oct 2005)
Learning outcomes
- to explore the nature of grief and the implications for effective communication
- to gain an understanding of the psychological component of sensitive and respectful communciation
- to gain an understanding of how an organisation's risk management strategy can be responsive to the needs of bereaved families
- to gain an increased awareness of the hospital and coroners' post mortem examination procedures and issues around the process of consent
- to consider and enhance your self-awareness in relation to loss and grief
- to develop support strategies appropriate for the bereaved and ourselves
- to gain an understanding of the change management process and how to effect positive change
- to gain information about the Child Bereavement Charity, other similar support organisations and resources available
Who should attend?
A TWO DAY course, suitable for all NHS professionals working with bereaved families in an advisory/support capacity in hospital or community setting
