Aim
To develop a greater understanding of how traumatic experiences affect children and families with particular reference to the impact on grieving, and to understand how therapy and other therapeutic opportunities can help to alleviate traumatic distress.
This workshop has been developed with help from David Trickey, Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Learning outcomes
- to recognise who is more likely to be affected by trauma
- to gain an understanding of how this explains different effects of trauma
- to gain an understanding of the cognitive model of trauma and how traumatic experiences are "processed"
- to explore how the effects of trauma can become an obstacle to grieving
- to gain an understanding of how therapy and therapeutic opportunities can diminish the traumatic effects, clearing the path for the grieving process
- to recognise the role of the family and other adults around children in assisting them to come to terms with their traumatic experiences
- to gain information about the Child Bereavement Charity, other similar support organisations and resources available
