Department of Health initiatives

The Child Bereavement Charity is grateful to the Department of Health for its recognition of the importance of appropriate support for professionals and, ultimately, bereaved families.

Initiatives supported by the department have included:

• The establishment of a network for those working in bereavement advisory capacity within NHS Trusts, through our website
• Building partnerships and training doctors through the course "Anatomy of Respect - what our bodies mean to us"
• Supporting professionals working with bereaved families in an advisory/support capacity in the NHS through a three day training course
• Development of a generic CD-ROM to provide an interactive e-learning programme on issues of bereavement
• Section 64 funding to create eight Bereavement Support posts in 1997
• The evaluation of the above project. A detailed report is available entitled "The First Two Years Experience of Child Bereavement Support Posts" from the Reference and Research material in the Professionals Members' Area of the web site.
• A CBC regional conference in Leeds on the subject of post-mortem examination, focusing on communication with families both before and after the event
• A second regional Conference, in partnership with Oxford Radcliffe Hospital NHS Trust, on issues of post-mortem examination
• Evaluation of Bereavement Advisor Training
• Development of Audit Model for those working in bereavement advisory capacity
