Supports 'Common core competences and principles for health and social care workers working with adults at the end of life' - to support the End of Life Care Strategy (DH 2008)
Aim
To enable participants to recognise what is important in communicating with families and children before and after death, to enhance the end of life care we provide and also to gain support for ourselves.
Learning Outcomes
• to gain a deeper understanding of loss, grief and bereavement
• to gain an insight into the needs and perspective of the dying parent
• to explore the needs of children in the family
• to relate theories of loss to our own and others' experiences
• to identify the importance of communication and listening skills
• to explore cultural aspects when supporting families
• to recognise and acknowledge existing skills
• to explore self-awareness and identify specific ways in which to support
ourselves
• to gain information about the Child Bereavement Charity, other similar support
organisations and resources available

Suitable for professionals in health and social care and for those in the voluntary sector who work with families where a parent or prime carer is facing a life threatening illness
