Aim
A workshop designed to develop communication skills and self-support for doctors working with any complex and difficult situation
In line with 'Better Care, Better Lives' (DH 2008) and the 'Gold Standards Service Framework'. The workshop also addresses relevant aspects of the RCPCH Competency Frameworks for levels 1 to 3.
Learning Outcomes
- to increase self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses around communication
- to gain an understanding of the communication skills needed to support bereaved families
- to increase confidence when approaching a situation where a doctor has to talk to parents and/or children about death
- to identify where families can access support and information
- to gain an understanding of how communication skills learnt in supporting the bereaved can be used to improve communication in other situations
- to provide guidance in planning follow-up care for bereaved parents
- to gain an understanding of reponses to stress and tragedy and look at ways of dealing with this in the workplace and at home
Who Should Attend?
Designed for RCPCH ST5 Paediatric Trainees, but also suitable for ST 6-8 Paediatric Trainees
