Introducing Death and Bereavement into the Curriculum

Death and dying are an inevitable part of all our lives. Including it in the curriculum when appropriate, helps to present the subject as something normal and natural rather than an event about which no one speaks.

It will help to create an open culture within your school with no subject off the agenda. Pupils will feel supported, safe, and better able to cope when inevitably someone important in their lives does die.

There are lots of ways to do this. Here are some general suggestions and examples of more structured lesson plans. If you feel a bit apprehensive, that is natural, but pupils are usually fascinated rather than upset.

Our lesson plans have a natural fit within PSHE, SEAL, Common Core of Skills and Knowledge, and also Schools4Life.

Do give any recently bereaved the pupils the chance to opt out if they wish, but they rarely do.
