A Star for Bobby

A Star for Bobby tells the story of a family of birds. One of the newly hatched birds Bobby, is sick and soon dies. Bobby is buried and his brother and sister, on going to bed that evening, look up at the night sky to see a star shining especially brightly, Bobby's star.  The story lets children know that it isn't their fault their brother or sister has died and that it is all right to feel sad and to say that they are.

 

We Were Gonna Have a Baby, But We Had an Angel Instead
Author: Pat Schwiebert and Taylor Bills
This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a little boy whose baby sibling dies. In the subsequent pages, the baby appears in each picture as a little angel, watching over the family. This title has very simple text and would be suitable for children from 2 years onwards.

 

Lucy's Baby Brother
Author: Althea Hayton
This book uses straightforward text and simple line drawings to tell the story of Lucy, aged four, whose baby brother dies shortly after his birth in hospital. Lucy goes to see Baby Tom, and the family take photographs of him. The story also tells of Baby Tom's funeral and of how, 2 years on, Lucy has a new baby brother, Sam.

All Shining in the Spring

All Shining in the Spring is a childcentred, simply written book. It is intended to give a child a clear and sympathetic understanding of the death of a baby, be it a family member or not, and to deal with the feelings and questions which such a death raises. The book can be read to or by a child and would be ideal in a family situation, in schools, for carers, social workers and maternity hospitals.

 

Saying Goodbye to a Brother or Sister

This title, to which The Child Bereavement Charity contributed, is in a similar  format to that of a Primary School textbook - with very clear text and many photographs, which illustrate well the emotions felt by the children. It aims to help younger children to understand that they are not alone in their grief - and describes the feelings of  other children who were similarly bereaved.

Remembering My Brother (Children's and Educational)
Author: Ginny Perkins and Leon Morris
In 1993, Chris Reed died. The author of this book has worked with his family to put this book together which aims to show the importance of talking about grief and loss and remembering with love someone important who has died. It relates ordinary family events alongside an account of the family's visit to Chris's grave.
