Bereaved Families and Schools

Support for your child from their school, The Child Bereavement Charity supports nurseries, schools and colleges.

The grieving children and young people that we work with at CBC, tell us that how their school responds is very important to them.

Many schools will respond in a caring and appropriate way, but others may not. Most staff want to help but sometimes, when dealing with this emotive subject, they are not sure what to do or say. This can result in them saying or doing little, or even in some instances, nothing at all. If you are concerned, give our support and information line a call 01494 568900, and CBC staff can talk you through ways we can help your child, their school, and you.

You can also call the line if you would like information on why a bereaved child may be more vulnerable than most when dealing with change such as a move to a new school.

Do let your child’s nursery, school or college know about us, even if you have no concerns. Teaching and non-teaching staff tell us they value the information and guidance we offer them on the support line 01494 568900.   The schools section on our website has a wealth of guidance for staff, information on CBC training courses for the education sector, and details of the CBC Schools Information Pack which has lots of practical help.

Nurseries, schools and colleges are busy places and many grieving parents and carers don’t want to be seen to be making a fuss.  It might help you to feel OK about having a reassuring chat with a teacher, or voicing concerns if you have them, to remember that support for your child will be most effective if everyone can work together. Most schools will appreciate you getting in touch and will want to help both you and your child at this very sad and difficult time.
